Projects Funded
Donations made to the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation are used to directly enhance patient and resident care – everything from peaceful aquariums to advanced radiological diagnostic equipment.
The following is just a sample of the enhancements made possible by Misericordia’s valued donors:

Ophthalmology Expansion Project ($90,000) – Eye Care Centre of Excellence
- Ergonomic Drinking Mugs for Long-Term Care Residents ($4,000) – Misericordia Place
- Microkeratome for the latest advance in corneal transplantaion: DSAEK - Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty ($20,000) – Eye Care Centre of Excellence
- Ultrasound Biomicroscopy Machine ($73,000) – High resolution diagnostic tool for Eye Care Centre of Excellence
- New Versatile Beds ($40,000) – Increases safety and prevention of falls for residents for Long-Term Care & Misericordia Place
- Gerontological Nursing Conference ($2,000) – Faculty of Nursing
- Fluorescein Camera ($175,000) – Eye Care Centre of Excellence
- Urgent Care Expansion Project ($1.7 million)
- Intra Ocular Electro Magnet ($8,000) – For surgical removal of metallic intra-ocular foreign objects bodies (metal objects lodged in the eye)
- Long-Term Care Room Development ($18,000) – Private Family Dining Room, Interim Care
- Operating Microscope ($142,325) – Excellent optics allow ophthalmologists to perform delicate intraocular surgery
- Tonopen ($4,325) – Used by Urgent Care physicians to measure intra-ocular pressures in patients with eye complaints to diagnose or rule out glaucoma
- Hydrorider ($1,900) – Specialized bicycle for use in the Misericordia pool, especially for post-mastectomy breast cancer patients
- Surgitron Machine ($20,350) – A surgical instrument used by ophthalmologists in oculo plastic surgical operations to minimize collateral tissue damage. Made possible by a gift from the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Memorial Eye Foundation
- Patient lift, slings and safety equipment ($13,610) – For the comfort and mobility of Interim and Long-Term Care patients and residents
- OCT (Optical Coherent Tomography) System ($95,210) – Used to measure the optic nerve and retina. Allows advanced diagnoses of macular diseases and glaucoma
- Stretcher Beds ($190,000) – For operating theatres: used during all phases of eye surgery to enhance efficiency, improve patient comfort and eliminate unnecessary movement of patients from stretchers to operating room beds
- Scheduling Software ($5,000) – Used in the Eye Care Centre of Excellence to improve efficiency of patient bookings and record keeping
- Face Down Vitrectomy Chairs ($3,500) – For use after surgical procedures; donation from the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Memorial Eye Foundation in memory of Irene Van Deventer
- Leica Camera ($12,500) – For use with a microscope to monitor progress of eye surgery
- Ice Machines ($3,000) – For use by Misericordia Place and Interim Care residents
- Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Screening ($50,000) – A three-year grant from Pfizer Canada; used for expanding the screening and education services of the PVD Clinic
- Photodynamic Therapy ($500,000) – For our Eye Care Centre of Excellence; a major gift from John and Bonnie Buhler to treat the wet form of macular degeneration and prevent blindness
- ABD Ultrasound ($140,000) – For use in ocular oncology; used to detect and monitor eye tumours (both cancerous and non-cancerous)
- Slit Lamp ($11,500) – A diagnostic microscope that provides a magnified image of the external portion of the eye. Made possible by a donation from the Lions Eye Bank of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario
- Misericordia Breast Screening Video ($12,000) – Production of a multi-language video describing the mammogram procedure. This video is at the Misericordia Health Centre site of the Manitoba Breast Screening Clinic
- Cataract Comfort Study ($7,200)
