As a faith-based Catholic Health Care Centre, Misericordia views the Spiritual Care of our residents, patients and their caregivers as a key component of the care we provide.

Since the establishment of Misericordia Health Centre in 1898, the Spiritual Care of those cared for has been an integral part of the care provided. Originally the responsibility of the Misericordia Sisters - who demonstrated God’s loving care in their work - and a resident Catholic Priest, Spiritual Care has evolved as a health care discipline.

The services of our professionally trained Spiritual Care providers are available to all Misericordia patients, residents, family, volunteers and staff. They may be of assistance in helping you to reflect on the events of your life, the meaning they have for you, and the adjustments you must make.

Spirituality is not the same as religion — it is more universal and inclusive. It may be described as the desire of each of us to do good and to find meaning and purpose in our lives, and in our unique connection to the universe of which we are a part. Spirituality involves a sense of personal integrity, of acting in a manner that is consistent with a set of values that cross cultural and religious traditions - and endure across time.

Spirituality at Work
The personal search for meaning and purpose in one’s life is a spiritual quest in which we seek a greater understanding of ourselves, the world around us, and our relationship to that world and the people in it. Spirituality at Work fosters an approach that allows participants to enter into those deeper questions. Sessions related to fostering Spirituality at Work are available to all staff.

Spiritual Care: Out-Patients
Patients in all Misericordia Health Centre programs and services may request to see a Spiritual Care provider. Requests may be made in person, through the operator, or the health-care provider you may be seeing for treatment. The Health Centre care team may initiate a referral on your behalf. Scheduled visits for the day of surgery may be arranged while at the Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (POAC).

On-site Spiritual Care providers, trained to minister in a multi-faith environment are available to provide spiritual and emotional support for you and your family.

Chapel Information
Misericordia has two chapels for the ease and comfort of those we serve:

  1. St. Luke's Chapel, Health Centre, Sherbrook 2
  2. Misericordia Place, Main Floor

Each chapel is open 24 hours a day for personal prayer and reflection and schedules of services are posted monthly.

Religious Services

Roman Catholic Mass
Sunday mornings and one day each week, Mass is celebrated in each of the Chapels.

Anointing of the Sick
Residents are provided with the opportunity for receiving the Sacrament of the Sick every three months as a means of strength and support on their journey. To arrange for Sacrament of the Sick before surgery, or at a time other than the scheduled services, please contact the Spiritual Care office at (204) 788-8283, or your pastor.

Inter-Church Services
Misericordia Spiritual Care providers and representatives of various Christian traditions alternate in providing religious services in each of the chapels every week.

Multi-Faith Needs
Misericordia cares for people of all traditions and welcomes their religious leaders to visit and provide appropriate support, prayer and rituals. Space suitable for this purpose may be arranged with the Spiritual Care office at (204) 788-8283. Dietary needs related to religious seasons and holy days may be arranged by notifying a nurse, or Resident Food Services. Each month a multi-faith calendar with a brief explanation of various religious holidays is made available at the chapels. Read the Scarboro Missions Golden Rule Across World Religions.
