Patient Guide Before Surgery
Welcome to Misericordia Surgical Program. To assist you in preparation for surgery, we request the following:
- DO NOT have anything to eat or drink after midnight, unless otherwise instructed.
- DO NOT wear eye makeup, lipstick or nail polish as it can distort assessment. Leave your jewellery at home, including rings and watches (Misericordia Health Centre will not be responsible for lost jewellery).
- Bring your Manitoba Health Card, Personal Health Identification Number (purple card) and any other health plan cards.
- If you become ill and / or unable to keep this appointment call your surgeon's office the day before or call MHC's patient registration at 204-788-8305.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian MUST accompany you.
- If you are a Day Surgery patient, you need to have a responsible adult take you home and stay with you overnight for 24 hours -- at your home or theirs.
- If you are from out of town, arrange for a place to stay overnight as you will have an appointment the next day with your eye doctor. Accomodation is available at a reasonable rate in the Misericordia LODGE. Information and reservation may be obtained by calling the LODGE at 204-788-8566.
- Bath or shower the morning of your surgery prior to coming to Misericordia Health Centre.
- Be at the Health Centre at the appointed time and report to Patient Registration (1st floor).
- Please follow instructions on which of your medications you can take before surgery and which ones you should not.
Bring ALL your MEDICATIONS in their original containers on the day of surgery. This includes pills, eye drops, patches, insulin, inhalers and herbal preparations. Also please follow any special instructions provided to you by your doctor.
