Ultrasound
Ultrasound is used in eye care primarily to measure the dimension of the natural structures in the eye, and determine abnormalities within the eyeball.
Ophthalmic ultrasound generally consists of two types: A-scan and B-scan. Similar to sonar, used in oceanography, ultrasound bounces sound waves off of structures within the eye. These sound waves are reflected back to the ultrasound probe where they are converted into a rough image of the eye's internal structures. This image will give the doctor information about the size, shape, thickness and placement of solid tissue within the eye.
Ultrasound is also used to measure the distance between refractive surfaces in the eye. This information can help a doctor determine refractive powers and even intraocular lens implant power needs.
